Sweet Iron bits are made of iron and have a characteristic blue color. Through contact with moisture, they develop a sweet-tasting surface rust, which naturally stimulates saliva production. This causes the horse to foam more and accept the bit better.
A double-jointed mouthpiece is a standard mouthpiece with two hinges that is more shaped towards the mouth and sits a little looser in the mouth. It exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars, and the corners of the mouth. Caution is advised with narrow lower jaws, as the hinge points can press on the bars, potentially leading to sores. Compared to a single-jointed bit, this bit exerts more pressure on the tongue.
The gag bit encourages the horse to lift its head and is often used with horses that go behind the bit. When the horse accepts the reins, the mouthpiece slides upwards, and the horse feels pressure in the corners of its mouth and in its poll. The bit can be used with one or two reins or with Pelham straps. In most cases, it is used with two reins, one attached to the bit and the other rein attached to one of the lower rings or to the end of the gag ropes. This way, the rider can use the gag action only when truly necessary. This bit is not suitable for inexperienced riders.
