Sweet iron bits are made of iron and have a characteristic blue color. Through contact with moisture, they develop surface rust that tastes sweet and naturally stimulates saliva production. This causes the horse to foam more and accept the bit better.
A double-jointed mouthpiece is a standard mouthpiece that has two hinges and is shaped more towards the mouth. It lies somewhat looser in the mouth and exerts pressure on the tongue, the bars, and the corners of the mouth. Caution is advised with narrow lower jaws, as the hinge points can press on the bars, which can lead to sores. Compared to a single-jointed bit, this bit exerts more pressure on the tongue.
The gag bit encourages the horse to lift its head and is often used with horses that run behind the bit. When the reins are taken up, the mouthpiece slides upwards, causing the horse to feel pressure in the corners of its mouth and on its poll. The bit can be used with one or two reins or with Pelham straps. Most often, it is used with two reins, with one attached to the bit and the other rein attached to one of the lower rings or to the end of the gag ropes. This way, the rider can use the gag action only when it is really necessary. This bit is not suitable for inexperienced riders.
